Must-Try Indonesian Street Food

1. Satay

The Very First on the menu is Satay. Satay or foreign Indonesian called it Sate is meat skewers that are cooked over coals. Almost all ethnic groups in Indonesia have produced various types of satay.  Satay can also be purchased by young people everywhere, ranging from satay vendors around the street, local vendors satay on the sidewalks, up to the hotel restaurant. 
Satay has a lot of variety. There are satay Madura, Satay Padang, satay java, and satay klathak.

These juicy skewers are normally provided with ketupat and delicate peanut sauce smeared all over the satay. 
It is a national dish created by street vendors and has been one of most famous local street food. It is literally everywhere and highly addictive.

2. Sweet Martabak (Sweet Stuffed Pancake)
The name mutabbaq (or sometimes mutabbag) in Arabic means "folded". In Indonesia, the Murtabak is one of the most popular street foods and is known as "martabak". There are two kinds of Martabak, The Sweet Stuffed one and The Salted Stuffed one. The difference is that Sweet Stuffed Martabak is a kind of cake or jam sandwich that is usually eaten in a relaxed time as a snack. While Salted Martabak is made from a combination of eggs and meat. 
Sweet martabak are normally filled with chocolate. You can also add another fillings to your sweet martabak such as strawberry, oreos, peanuts, and cheese! Depending on the location, name, and composition of martabak may vary.

3. Salted Martabak
 

Different from Sweet Martabak, this meat and egg stuffed food is quite delicious and popular among foreigners. It's texture is more crunchy and oily than Sweet Martabak. Usually it's filled with meat and egg, but with a glimpse of luck you can find unique taste of Salted Martabak like salted egg!

4. Nasi Padang (Padang Steamed Rice)

Nasi Padang is a meal of steamed rice provided with many options of readily available dishes derived from Padang city and also combined with more than a dozen dishes.

Nasi Padang (Padang-style rice) is also a combination of meats, fish, vegetables, and spicy sambals consumed with plain white rice, it is Padang most well-known export and its people great gifts to many Indonesian cuisines. The best method is to put aside the cutlery and consumed with hands then wash the spice away with a sweetened cold tea.

5. Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Fried Rice)


Last but not least, our favorite Nasi Goreng. It's an Indonesian rice dish with pieces of meat and vegetables added. It can refer simply to fried pre-cooked rice, a meal including stir fried rice in a small amount of cooking oil or margarine, typically spiced with kecap manis (sweet soy sauce), shallot, garlic, ground shrimp paste, tamarind and chilli and accompanied by other ingredients, particularly egg, chicken and prawns.

Nasi Goreng don't have the limits of social status. Whether it’s regular fried rice or five-star restaurant Nasi Goreng, Nasi Goreng can always be consumed by anyone. Hence Fried Rice is regarded as Indonesia’s national food.
